“Every time that championship happens, you will see me at the top. Because, my brother, I come to win.” – Terere

Here’s a video that should excite every fan of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Fernando “Terere” Augusto is coming back to the compete at the World Championships!

For those that don’t really know the significance of this video, please allow for a brief historical summary. Terere (pronounced “Te-da-day” in Portuguese) is a legendary black belt under Alexandre Paiva of Alliance and Jiu Jitsu World Champion. He was one of the founders of the TT team with Eduardo Telles, personally tutoring future champions like Andre Galvao and Ruben “Cobrinha” Charles.

His nickname  comes from the name of a a yerba mate preperation that is both energetic and dark in colour. Not very subtle.

Terere’s absence from competition came as he began to slide deeper into drug addition following a disturbance on a flight to the US. He is currently training hard in the UK and plans to make a second run at high-level Jiu Jitsu competition.

Here’s a highlight video of Terere. It remains to be seen if he can recapture his former stature as the most explosive and exciting Jiu Jitsu fighter of his generation.

  1. Terere is awesome. He is one of my favorite competitors from a few years ago. Since you put this up a little bit ago I’m sure you heard that he is battling his demons again and hasn’t made the comeback. I was so looking forward to it to.
Have you seen the Marcelo Garcia highlight video? Despite beating him, I still like Terere. Ever seen those matches between Terere and Roger? Even with the huge weight difference those were awesome.
